Fabrics for Leggings

The fabric is the most important component of any piece of clothing. There is a wide range of fabrics available in the market, you need to make a wise decision while choosing the fabric. The choice of fabric depends upon the usage of cloth i.e. Does cloth needs to be stretched? Do you need to use it regularly or only for the occasion? Looking for soft fabric etc. You need to ask these questions before making a purchase. Let’s look at some of the fabric available in the market for leggings:

Cotton: Cotton is a natural fiber that comes from the cotton plant. It resembles a twisted ribbon. Cotton is a very popular fabric as it is easy to care for and comfortable year-round. Cotton fiber offers breathability in summer, absorbs moisture and releases it to the surface to evaporate. In cold weather, it helps you maintain body heat. Cotton fabric shrinks so it is recommended to soak in water before making any clothes.

Polyester: Polyester is a synthetic fabric, a man-made fiber. When looked through the microscope it resembles plastic spun together. Polyester fiber can have various qualities like waterproof, wrinkle-free, fire-resistant, stain-resistant, etc. Quality depends upon fiber and chemicals used while making this. Two disadvantage of this fabric is breathability & non-biodegradable.

Spandex or Lycra: It is another well known synthetic fiber known for elasticity & strength. Spandex can stretch up to 5 times its original length and can return to the original shape. This is commonly used in sportswear, activewear or we can say skin-tight garments. For leggings, spandex is mixed with cotton and constitute a small percentage of the final mixture. Lycra leggings offer breathability, strength, and durability.
